This is just an update showing where I am in this process. I really enjoy creating these. However, I do long to get back behind the camera. Photoshop is great, but it doesn't have the same feel as photography really does. I hope to convert an old camera that I have very soon and as the weather gets warmer I plan to go out and about more. We shall see....

Here is a "scanogram" project I did nearly 3 years ago. Since I made this I see some things I would have done differently. Maybe I'll make those changes sometime. I'm jumping back into making these though. I have a few new ideas as to what I should do with them. We shall see. Anyway, just know that I'm way better at photoshop that I was when I made these. haha

Oktomat Troubles

So I took my Oktomat camera out again recently and sadly the film got all caught up in the camera. Soooo.... this is what I've got. Nothing spectacular, but it was fun nonetheless. Toy cameras just don't seem to like me much. I am also working on a new project of "scanograms." I hope to have one ready to post this weekend. Stay tuned!

Haha, there is a story about this one. So on the drive we're finally coming into Provo, Utah and there is a dead bloated cow on the side of the road-- sad day. Seth is driving and decides he wants a picture so he swings a U and we go back for a snap shot. I take the picture with two cameras at the same time-- this one is mine, and then I also used his.

Strange Light. Utah. 2010

There was a storm today, as there was yesterday, only today the sun decided to take a peak at the damage done. Turns out, it makes a very unusual combination. Dark skies with brilliant highlights on the ground. I grabbed my camera when I got home and ran outside. This is just around my apartment complex. I doubt I captured it as beautiful as it was, but it was fun for me to try. Blogger totally ruins the color, trust me... it's way better than it looks here on the blog.

So I bought an Oktomat camera a while back and used it on my road trip from Texas to Utah. I suck at toy camera photography... or maybe I'm just no good at photography in general. Haha. Oh well. It's super fun playing with this camera. Here are some images from the first two rolls of film. I didn't crop them, so they're pretty rough right now. I may do it later, but I just wanted to get a post up. It's been a while.

When Film Goes Wrong

So this particular roll of film had some trouble. The little sponges inside my Holga came out and were rolled up into the film and cause major light leaks and pushed the film away from view and caused blurring... basically it is a mess. However, I am going to post them out of curiosity. I kind of like them and then again I don't. You can see the "Kodak" on one of them, it's kind of funny. I definitely need to work on my Holga skills. I haven't had much luck. I always forget to change the focal length.

Seven months later...

Here's a quick update before I head to bed. I've been shooting with my Holga mostly these days. I've gotten bored with digital. The hardest part is that I have to wait 3 weeks for my film to be processed and it's about $10 a pop. I'm really not very practiced at the Holga so this is all very lame looking to me. I love light leaks, but I haven't had any luck with them occurring on a particularly spectacular image. Oh well... the fun part is the reveal as I scan them. I really enjoy film right now since it requires patience. Anyway... here are a few. I'll post more later.

These were from my trip to DC back in April. I really hope to visit there again one day. I was accepted at GWU for my Master's degree, but decided it wasn't for me. I'm applying to more schools on the west coast. I'm not a huge fan of how congested DC was. It was terrific to visit though.

I love the look of black and white photography, but I think there is an obvious difference between the masters and amateurs like me. My black and white images typically start out in color and I have a hard time deciding whether an image would look better in black and white or not. I thought I'd give it a shot and see how they turned out. They're not my favorite, but they're not bad. This first image is an old beach house that was torn up by hurricane Ike. It's barely in the shot, but there is an old pick up truck wedged on the dock part that connects it to the street. It's as though the winds picked up the truck and dropped it on the wood dock. So sad.

For a couple of weeks we had very heavy fog and I was out walking the Kemah Boardwalk with a friend and I saw the dock with the bright light and hoped and prayed I'd make it back there with my camera while we still had fog. Lucky me! I definitely did. It was drizzly and raining so I had to shelter my camera during these shots, but it was worth it.

I am currently working in Downtown Houston in Fulbright Tower, one of the tallest high rise buildings in Houston, Texas. I have worked there for about a month now and I finally got a tour of the building and was taken up to the roof. It is 52 stories from the ground. I was very excited to see Houston from a perspective I had not before. As a child I was taken to the 51st floor of the Transco (Now 'Williams') Tower but it wasn't the same. This time I was on the roof and had a 360 degree view of the city. I hope to go up there at night some time to get some beautiful night photography shots. These images I have taken were with a 50mm lens with a polarized filter. I played around with the color and contrast. I definitely enjoy taking panoramics.

I am absolutely loving this Drive By Shooting project I've started. I am now using a polarized filter and it's giving me the colors I felt were lacking in Part I. I am going to keep doing this because it is so much fun and I personally love the results I am getting. Let me know what you think.

This is something new I am trying. I like to go riding with my sister and while she drives I photograph things out the windows and let the movement of the car 'paint' a picture. I adjust the exposure according to the lighting. I typically use a slower shutter to influence the movement more. The color in the original images is so much more rich and vibrant. It is starting to really perturb me that the colors just aren't turning out right. I'd like some honest feed back about these, but be gentle.

After graduation I spent 3 weeks in Utah before heading back to boring Houston, Texas. I decided I wanted to experience Utah in a way I hadn't before. While my dad and sister were in town we went to Deer Creek Resevoir and had a really great time. I went hiking and hot air ballooning and then skydiving to top it all off. These are just a few images from those 3 weeks. Anyone have suggestions on how to make sure the color is correctly loaded? I'm disappointed with how most of my images are posting.

This was in the San Francisco/Sacramento area back in March for the travel class credit at BYU-Idaho. It was a fantastic trip! I would totally do it again if given the chance. It was such a fulfilling adventure. Museum hopping was an experience I hadn't had up to that point in my life. I would love to work in a museum as a coordinator or whatever. I also discovered on this trip how much I love panoramic images if they are done right. I like to practice with different scenes. The first image is a series of horizontal images stacked done at Muir Woods and the second image is located at Muir beach with vertical images stitched together. The final image was at the Crocker Museum in Sacramento in the Old Gallery style set up. This image is almost a complete 360 degree view, hence the distortion. I had not done a panoramic in a 360 degree view but I love the way this one turned out.

Earlier this year in Rexburg, Idaho I thought I would drive around and photograph the scenery I was to leave the following summer. Now that I have posted these two images it makes me really miss the mornings of freshly fallen snow, although these pictures have dirty snow. I just love a snowy white winter.

Fine Art Show

Tonight was the Opening Reception for the Fine Art show here at BYU-Idaho. It was a decent turn out for it being a 4 day weekend. I was very surprised by the feed back I got on my 13 images. I guess I tend to be a little shy, but I feel really good about my work.

I will be posting images on here soon enough, and I apologize that there aren't any as of yet. This blog is a way for me to share my work for free since I cannot currently afford a real website. As soon as I get one, I will post the web address.
